This is another one of those stories that, more or less, came from out of the blue. I was helping out my father at the auto shop he works at one day, and for some reason, I started thinking of Tales of the Abyss
; odd, considering I don't even own the game.
But anyway, for those that don't know, the game is part of Namco-Bandai's Tales of
series, which has been around since the mid-90s. And out of all of them, Abyss
is the one I know the most about, with a lot of that knowledge coming from ~Phantom-Lucario
, who adores the game greatly.
So, I figured it had been a while since I did anything with the Abyss
cast...and at the same time, I thought of the cinematics for Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds
, as well as the full cinematic for Ultimate
...and then this happened. I decided to go with using various author avatars as the opponents of choice because...well, it's kind of fun, to be honest with you. There's another reason, but I'll bring that up in a minute. For now, let's break down some of the matchups and why I decided to go with them...Luke fon Fabre vs No Limit/~NoLimit5
One of my original ideas was to pit Kira, or ~hylian-maiden
, against Luke, but since I gave her the first appearance in my other vignette, In the Face of Doom
, I figured it wouldn't be fair. So, I decided to give my friend No Limit the honor of starring in the first fight against Luke. The matchup itself is also a good personal contrast; NL is far more rational and level-headed, whereas Luke is more hotheaded and temperamental. To the point of him yelling "shut up" over 40 times.
Also, the battle in the rain is supposed to be an homage to this cutscene from the game: [link]Tear Grants vs. Taylor/*TaytoWhitneyGHA
Again, this was another matter of contrasting personalities. While Tear has a soft spot for all things cute and fluffy and has a motherly instinct to her, she often comes off as very cold and detatched, and only in real moments of weakness does she ever show any emotion. Taylor? Almost the opposite. Yeah, she's very caring, but she's not afraid to let her emotions show. Also, both have impressive singing talents, though Tear's is more practical for using Fonic Hymns.Jade Curtiss vs. Zeno Necrostorm/~zenotheshademaster
This isn't so much contrasting personalities as they are similar backstories. Both Jade and Zeno have a dark past to them, and both have ghosts that haunt them. They're also both known to be fairly sarcastic. But the bigger draw is that Jade is a necromancer while Zeno is a Heartless. You do the math. Anise Tatlin vs. Tomahawk/~Papa-T-41/ME!
Anise, to me, is an interesting character in that she doesn't do much of the fighting, but rather leaves that to...a giant stuffed animal. That has the potential to beat the snot out of you to Kingdom Come and back again. Hilariously awesome.
Not to mention, I thought it would be humorous to match up a titan of a man wielding two discus shields against a girl riding a doll. So, you could chalk this one up as a "Lethally Humorous" matchup.Guy Cecil vs. Kira/~hylian-maiden
Now THIS is the other reason why I held Kira out of the battle with Luke; so she could go at it with the "Amazing" Guy! Part of the significance in this matchup is the fact that Guy is terrified of women; not that he hates them, mind you, but it has more to do with a major detail of his backstory. I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't played the game, but when you learn about it, you'll see why. Also, it was a good contrast because Guy is a swordsman who focuses on pure speed; Kira is more of a balance between speed and power, but also knows a good deal of magic to boot.Natalia Luzu Kimlasca-Lanvaldear vs. Miss Molly/~McFlippinHoney
The idea behind this matchup had more to do with how it presents itself from a pure battle standpoint. As an archer, Natalia excels at ranged fighting, where Molly is more up close and personal being a Jedi Knight. So, I thought the idea of the two butting heads would be an interesting concept.Mieu vs. Lunise/~Lunachu
Another humorous matchup, with a much higher cuteness factor. That is all. Van Grants vs. Skyler/~Phantom64 or ~SoonerComics
This is mostly playing off Skyler's love for being a hero and pitting him against the big bad. Honestly, there's not much else to this matchup. Asch the Bloody vs. Rasyid the Stranger/~strangerthenever
Pitting the Stranger against the first of the Six God-Generals was mostly based off the Rule of Cool, as was them fighting inside an active volcano (which was inspired by the volcanic island stage in Street Fighter IV
). And yes, the Stranger aped Doctor Doom's Foot Dive. Again, Rule of Cool applies.Legretta the Quick vs. Dr. Dude/~slyboyseth
A lot of this battle was largely inspired by the bar fight between Deadpool and Dante in the first Marvel vs. Capcom 3
cinematic trailer, right down to the setting. I also decided to pit Seth against Legretta because of his Casanova tendancies. Not that they'd do him any good against her...Arietta the Wild vs. Essteka/~Essteka
Interesting thing to note about Essteka's author avatar is that I blended elements of two series he's into (Ninja Turtles
), along with elements of the Strider
series, such as the blade and teleporting kicks. It also works because Arietta uses animals to do most of her grunt work, and she's facing a humanoid turtle. So...yeah.Dist the Rose vs. Soma/~Sonicmario
Okay, technically Dist doesn't really fight persae, but I decided to pit Soma against him, anyway. Since Soma's avvie is based around Sonic the Hedgehog
, and Dist employs Kaiser Dists to do his bidding, the matchup is closer to a traditional Sonic vs. Eggman battle. Technological genius vs. super-fast hedgehog, army of robots...yeah, it's all there.Sync the Tempest vs. Phantom/~Phantom-Lucario
When I first started doing this vignette, the first matchup that I knew I was going to do was Phantom vs. Sync; Sync is one of Phantom's favorite characters from the game, she absolutely LOVES the guy. So, why not match them up in a fight, right?Largo the Black Lion vs. Cap'n Joe/*Captainface
This matchup was made in the same mindset as the Anise vs. Tomahawk matchup (big fighter vs. little fighter), but with a more serious tone. It's more of a matchup of Largo's immense strength vs. Joe's agility and quick thinking.Grand Maestro Mohs vs. Joevakin/~Vir-Machinae
While they don't really fight, I wanted to find some way to get Mohs involved in the action. I won't spoil it for anyone, but this guy is friggin REPULSIVE; both figuratively and literally. Half the stuff that happens in the game? Yeah, all his handiwork. So what better way to ensure that his comeuppance would be served at the hands of the mighty August Born?
If you want to know what inspired me to make Mohs the main cause of the story, and check out some cool artwork at the same time, check this: [link]
Whew...alright, longest description ever.
But anywho, this is just a little thing I came up with, so it's nothing TOO major. Enjoy!
